Mechanism & study background
YK-11 was first characterised by Kanno and colleagues, which is the origin of the "YK" designation. Unlike the non-steroidal SARMs, its structure is derived from 5α-dihydrotestosterone, and it is described as a partial agonist at the androgen receptor rather than a full agonist.
The research interest centres on a secondary mechanism: in cell-culture work it has been reported to increase expression of follistatin, a protein that binds and antagonises myostatin. Myostatin acts as a negative regulator of muscle tissue growth, so compounds that interact with this pathway are of interest in studies of muscle wasting and related conditions.
It is important to note that the YK-11 literature is preclinical — in-vitro and animal studies. There is no clinical trial record comparable to Ostarine or Ligandrol, and its pharmacokinetic and safety profile in humans is not established.
